Okay, so seeing as is this is one of the things I'm almost as obsessed with as I am with Twilight, I figured I should start up a thread dedicated to it, for me and anybody else here who's adores figure skating.

So who else skates?

I'm interested to know. What level are you at? What stuff are you learning? Who are your favourite skaters?

Very Happy

I don't know how to skate and I have no coordination either so it doesn't work too good for me.

Aww that sucks. Skating helps build coordination, though. I bet if you tried you'd learn pretty quickly.

Technically, I have never actually ice skated before but I do rollerblade a lot. And a few years ago, during the winter my brother and I even tried to rollerblade on a huge patch of ice that was in my yard. We didn't have any ice skates, but I always wanted to know what it was like to ice skate so we took a chance with the rollerblades. It wasn't the easiest thing to do, but it was a lot of fun. We couldn't stop laughing at each other.

I fall on my butt a lot. You can't expect to skate without falling. It really hurts though when you're trying to throw yourself in the air and spin around two times and then collapse in a heap on the ice Razz

Rollerblading on ice? That sounds very interesting. I would probably end up cracking my head open on the ice.

I rollerblade quite a bit too (when I start missing the ice. It's the closest I can get to it without driving for forty minutes to the arena - although I do that seven times a week...) I can't do anything really cool on rollerblades, because believe it or not it's really quite different to skating.

Oh it was interesting all right, to say the least. I ended up on my backside the moment I stepped onto the ice. And after several attempts of trying to get back up. But we eventually got the hang of it and were able to actually skate around. And it was a good thing we had our gear on or there would have been at least one cracked open skull.

I've been rollerblading for years and I still can't do any tricks, well nothing really impressive anyway. A few jumps here and there and a twirl or two, but that's about it. I won't be signing up for any Extreme sports teams anytime soon that's for sure. I don't really care about the tricks anyway, it's all about the speed with me. I like to test myself and see how fast I can go...preferably without hitting a rock or something and smashing my face into the road.

LOL Razz

The speed is the best part of it. It gets annoying when you have to worry about crashing into little kids, though. Of course, the spins and jumps are definitely highlights as well. The worst part is definitely the off-ice training. It's an hour and a half of continuous exercise, and it kills your muscles. Seriously, they make you do the oversplits (putting your leg on a chair and pushing it out as far as it can go) for three minutes straight, on each leg. And then you have to do all these crazy exercises that have your legs shaking from exhaustion after like five minutes, and make you run around in circles for eight minutes... it's torture, to say the least.

But, having said that, the positive things definitely outweigh the negative ones. When you're actually on the ice it rocks. As long as the obnoxious little brats aren't stampeding across the ice...

I'm a pretty pathetic skater: i'll pass my ISI FS3 test and USFSA Pre-Juv field moves when I can get some decent skates, but that's all. My jumps suck, though my spins are decent... when I have real skates.

Do hockey players count as little brats? 'Cause they definitely are!

Do you do Synchro? I'm on a team, and it ROCKS! (Well, unless we're trying not to kill the evil bitty prep kids who think they rule the world... When they're behaving, or not there, it's amazing!)

Haha. I'm not in a synchro team, no. The teams at our arena here are pretty pathetic, and they think too highly of themselves. They give synchro a bad image. Heck, they give skating a bad image. But I don't doubt that your team is pretty cool Very Happy

I'm pretty serious about it (okay, so that's an understatement - I practically live at the arena). I'm not in a very high level (the Aussie system is different anyway) but that's because my coaches are really stupid about testing, and always make us wait until we're able to pass like... two levels ahead before we can do a test.

I skate about... five times a week (occasionally six) and I also do ballet at the arenas with this Russian guy on Saturdays (I'm actually down at the arena for four and a half hours in the mornings) to help with it, and on Sundays I have the dreaded off-ice training in the afternoon.

My favourite part is the competitions, and learning new programs. Getting dresses made to suit the music is pretty cool, too. And I like the dramas at the arena, too. I have lots of friends there, which is cool, but then of course there's always gossip about certain people, and there's a couple of coaches down there who don't like my sister and I because our dad coaches hockey, and they don't like the hockey guys because they always fight with them over the ice time Razz

we're pretty bad, but we have fun and we don't take ourselves too seriously. but we're always discriminated against because we're on the team, which is totally not fair!

i know people like that. i admire them as much as i'm glad i'm not one of them Razz. my coach won't let me test until i could pass that test with my eyes closed, but she's pretty good about guessing when that is. i've never failed a test yet Very Happy.

i skate twice a week. i do no ballet and i am not at the arena early in the morning. my off ice is nothing but floor practice with my team. all in all, you're way more serious than i am. *grins* when you're famous, i want to watch you and jump up and down screaming, "I know her! I know her!"

I don't compete alone, but we compete as a team, and that's a lot of fun. when we're not all yelling at each other, that is. (there are two groups on my team: the evil prep people, and us. i'm sure they think of us as the evil emo people, even though only one of us is emo, and she's not even really emo. *sigh*) but the dramas are amazing. my mom has an ear for gossip, and she tells me everything that she hears. it's highly entertaining!

i'm not a big fan of hockey, but i know a couple hockey players, and they're okay. and i like the coaches. one guy yelled at his student and made him apologize to me after the kid ran smack dab into me, which was cool. but we definitely have to fight for the ice time, which is annoying.

Haha, there's a lot of silent discrimination against synchro here, and I can't say that I'm not part of it. But hey, these ones deserve it - they're all full of themselves because they get to go to nationals (they're the only team in the state at their level) and they're always hogging the ice even though they're not supposed to be on our ice time.

I have an almost perfect record for tests. I passed every single one I did in Canada, but then my first one here, I failed. The judge who judges the tests is supposedly the hardest marker in the state, so I felt pretty special when I got a perfect pass last time Very Happy

You're very lucky you don't have to do the kind of off ice I do. It's the most horrible kind of exercise I've ever experienced, and I dread it every week. They always ask us if we're dead at the end, and when we say yes, they ask us to rate it on a scale of one to ten. Most of us just say fifty billion.

Haha, I'm not really that great, but I think it would be really cool to go international. And of course, if I see somebody screaming crazily in the crowd (wearing a t-shirt that says "Where's my child support, Jasper?" on it, then I'll know who you are Razz). Right now I'm not even at national level, but I'm getting there slowly. I came third at states last year, but the competition wasn't very tough.

My mom is my source of gossip as well. My skating friends' moms are total gossips, and they tell her everything, and through my mom, I learn everything. I agree, it's very entertaining. The skaters and parents at my arena are really quite divided by coaches, as in all the skaters that have the same coach as me are my friends and we pretty much stay out of the way of most other people - though we're a lot more friendly than the skaters that have the evil coaches. It's all like a TV drama, really Razz

I get really annoyed by hockey guys at public sessions. They think they're so cool, but they just fly around with no coordination like a deadly, unguided missile.

I was pretty happy after my lesson today, cause I landed my axel about five or six times, and I could finally do a proper flying camel (I'm hoping you know what those are, so they don't sound completely crazy to you Razz) My coach did stretch me into a biellman position (you know that thing where you grab your foot with both arms over your head?) on my bad leg, though. It was rather painful, but hey, I need to improve my flexibility Razz

I'm gonna get to learn my new program soon. I got my new music, and it's REALLY cool, and I get to design a dress for it and get it made. I can't wait till the competitions, but of course I'm also really nervous. There's three of them all really close together, and the first one's in late April. Yikes, that's a lot closer than I thought it was.

We have a lot of not so silent discrimination at our rink, unfortunately. but some of the girls on my team do deserve it: they're evil and preppy and i want to murder them. preferably with a pocket knife. while i laugh at their pain...
anyway...

i've passed all of mine, but i haven't taken very many. i'm going to take a couple more when i can get decent skates, as i said. (and the skate lady is coming on Saturday and she hopefully has skates for me and i'm really REALLY excited! bounce) congrats on the perfect pass! what kind of test was it?

i bet. i am NOT athletic in the slightest, so i would be dead about, oh, three seconds in. lol. maybe five minutes in. my friend had a coach who made her run up and down stairs for off ice training. i'm REALLY glad my coach doesn't make me do that! i would die!

you're a LOT better than me. i don't compete individually, but as a team we're pretty... low level. it's kinda sad. and i'm nowhere NEAR national level! but i will so be there when you do compete! let me know when and where and i will be there if time and finances allow. congrats on the third place finish! that's really good, regardless of the competition!

i love it when my mom does the gossiping for me! of course, i pay her back with news of my friends' soap opera lives. now that's entertaining Razz! we don't divide ourselves by coaches so much as by level. the people who have the same practice sessions are friends, especially as the levels get higher and there are fewer people per session. we're pretty friendly too, but people tend to avoid us for some reason...Twisted Evil

hockey guys on public sessions should go and die. they run into people and walls and pretend they're cooler than us, when it's obvious that we're cooler than them because we don't need layers and layers of padding and we're jumping and spinning and they're not.

you're so lucky! (yes, i know what they all are Wink. i'm not that good, but i know my terminology Razz). i'm working on my loop (which should die), my flip (which should also die), my layback, and my sit spin. i can't even contemplate a biellman (i've always wondered how to spell that Razz), i'm WAY too inflexible. *sigh* that's what i get for not working at it.

what music is it? my friend and i skated to the song pick a pocket or two from the musical Oliver! and it was amazing! we had SO much fun! we would steal things from each other and run away and it was amazing! show us the design when you finish it! i bet it'll be amazing! three in a row?! actually, i think we have 3 in april as well. lovely. maybe we can stop screeching at each other long enough to practice a bit. *sigh* it IS really close, isn't it? yikes indeed!

I want to murder a lot of the synchro girls at my rink. They think they're so cool, but really they have it easy. Seeing as they're the only team in the state, they go to nationals no matter what. And they're all like "I can't believe we're going to nationals again," and all that, and they act like it's really hard, even though they don't have to do anything to get there. It drives me crazy.

It was a figure test. Relatively simple. My coach doesn't want to move me along very fast, even though I could easily pass the next test.

Running up and down the stairs would be a piece of cake compared to what my coaches make us do. I wish it was as simple as stairs, but it's a whole lot of nasty, painful things that I don't even want to describe, instead.

Yes, I agree. Kill the hockey dudes. They're all inexperienced twits with huge egos (of course, my brother is one of them, but he's not anywhere near as bad). They think they're so cool, but I'd love to see them attempt a double salchow. I think they'd probably fall on their butts. But of course, they'd have their sissy little butt pads on, so it wouldn't hurt them (unfortunately).

Don't worry, I had trouble with my flip and loop when I first started learning them. After a while they come easily, and the technique becomes a habit. You just really need to throw yourself up in the air. That's the trick, I've learned. Otherwise you don't get anywhere (no, really?). My sit spin sucked for a long time but I've finally managed to get it perfected. My camel spin is my best move right now - I can get it going really fast and I can do as many as ten rotations if I want to, but obviously that wastes time in the program. And I'm pretty inflexible too, but my coach is strong, and good at pushing us into positions. The other day (because my axel went down the drain) he was trying to make me remember to swing with my right arm when I jump, and he came and started twisting the skin on my arm around really hard, just so I would remember "that it's there".

And now I found out that I have to have an axel in my program. Just lovely. I can't even do one properly anymore.

I don't know what the music is. My coach has the strangest taste, so we never know where anything comes from. My sister got some jolly little country town jingle, with a harpsichord and stuff. It sounds so pathetic and sweet that I almost crack up at this particular part in it. My friend got some weird kind of Mexican music, and last year my sister had music with beatboxing in it for her short program. So yeah, I don't know where any of it comes from.

That sounds really fun, though. Unfortunately I don't get to have any say in my music.

I'm getting kind of nervous about the competitive season now. I've got the Gala in April, the Mary Ellen Holland Trophy in June and States in August. And if I can't get my axel right before the Gala... man, I'm gonna die.

Lol Razz Complicated, isn't it?

Basically we were talking about synchronized skating teams, dramas at the arena, gossiping mothers, torturous off ice (or lack of), annoying hockey dudes who should die, competitions, music for routines, and the fact that I landed my axel (big jump, in simpler terms) five times and can finally do a proper flying camel (don't ask) and Anne is working on her flip jump, loop jump, layback and sit spin.

Hope that helps make it a little clearer Lilly Very Happy

Lol Razz It sounds ridiculous, doesn't it? But it's actually a relatively hard spin/jumpy thing to do. I only just managed to get it right recently. I assure you it's NOTHING like an actual flying camel, except for the flying part because you kind of fly through the air and land spinning. There's also a spin that's just called a camel spin, and it's my best spin by far. It's very fun too Very Happy

It looks really cool if you do it properly. Especially if you do the cool one where you twist yourself until your chest is facing up instead of down. THEN it looks AMAZING!!!

my friend competed this sat. she did ice dancing and freestyle, and lost both times, Sad. It was sad. she didn't deserve to lose the dance, though. (i didn't see the freestyle, so i have no comment). the only reason she got 3rd instead of 2nd was that one of the competitors was a guy, and the judges favor guys. Mad he was double footing EVERYTHING, and my friend is a REALLY good dancer! we decided that, had the boy been another girl, my friend and the girl who got 1st would have been 1st and 2nd. my friend is graceful and flowy, and the other girl has power and speed. *shrug* but that's ice rink politics for you...

and i got new skates on sat!!!! they're brand new Jacksons that we got for about $160, which is amazing! now i can ditch the $100 starter skates i've been using, which have no toe picks at ALL and actually get back to practicing properly again! Yay! cheers

Yeah, I can do it properly but there's no way I can do it with the whole turning upside down thing! I agree, it looks awesome though! Have you seen the Korean skater Yuna Kim do it? She's amazing. But Mao Asada is better... Razz

Aww, I hate judges. Last year at states they placed a girl who was probably about an EIGHT year old ahead of me, just because she was young and cute. And they also placed a girl ahead of me who was the sloppiest skater I'd ever seen, but she could somehow do an axel. I remember in Canada there was this female judge who used to fail all the boys in their tests. It was so painfully obvious that she didn't like boys, but she still got away with it. She even failed my brother on his first dance test, just before we came to Australia... my coaches gave him the badge anyway just so he wouldn't get discouraged. He quit anyway Razz And yeah, a lot of judges seem to prefer power to grace. I don't think that's fair. There's this girl at my rink who's AMAZINGLY powerful and can do huge jumps for her age, but her skating style is really jerky. She always wins, even though there's another girl at her level who is really really graceful.

Oo, I have Jacksons! But the tongues are starting to wear out a bit now and my coach isn't really happy with them because they're not a "known" name (just because he doesn't know Canadian skates... *sigh*). So next time I'll probably be getting better ones, like Grafs maybe.

Haha, I just got home from practice. I was landing my axel today, which was good, and I was coming close with some of my double jumps. I have an axel in my program... *shudders* I'll probably relax completely after I get it over with (if I land it). I guess I just really need to work on perfecting it now.
