I overuse commas, too. And I also get confused with semicolons. Sometimes they work when I try to use them, and other times they just don't. So I just avoid them I use "-"s a lot in places they probably shouldn't go, but oh well.

Anne, she doesn't really do either. I guess she kind of overuses them, but it's mainly just that she doesn't understand how to use them in the first place. Like, she'll write, "I walked into the kitchen, Edward was already waiting for me there." That's just a random example, but there are so many of those kinds of things in her story that it's not funny.

musn't forget the "captain". lol. so what did you say, sky?

ooh, random note on ellipses! my friend and i were trying to decide what to call them apart from "dotdotdot" and we came up with either "dot to the third" or "3dot". (yes, we're both in honors math. lol) we decided on "dot to the third" since it makes more sense. and i don't know why i told you that... (see, i use them far, FAR too much!) anyway, getting back to the actual POST...

oh, i see. that gets on my nerves SO much. part of being a nerd/grammar nazi, i suppose. if you use the commas like that, then the sentence is run-on. THAT would be a good place to use a semi-colon. "I walked into the kitchen; Edward was already waiting for me there." i can see how that wouldn't be funny.

lol once in PE back in 8th grade we had a three-on-three basketball tournement. my team was called S cubed because it was me (Skylar), Stephanie, and Selina, so 3 s's!!!

our logo was the superman symbol with a little 3 where the exponet goes lol.

we were nerds.

we got 2nd in that tournement, too...

But wouldn't three dots be 3dot? Because dot cubed would be dot times itself times itself... Maybe I'm just getting too deep into this. "Dot to the third" and "dot cubed" sounds cooler

I know, Anne. It was pretty frustrating reading it and restraining from pulling out a pen and correcting every single mistake. It's not only her, though - it seems to be a thing with Australians. My other friend asked me to proofread her short story, and she did the exact same thing, only her writing in general was terrible as well. I think there is an EXTREME lack of good writers these days. They seem to have just congregated at Cullen Cults

lol, when we had to correct each others' science papers, i kinda skimmed over the whole science bit and concentrated on the grammar. it was actually pretty good, since my partner, who later became one of my best friends, is a writer and she's really good. but yeah. i was reading my dad's students' essays (he's a college professor, and i don't think he teaches freshmen either) because they were out, and the first one i picked up was HORRIBLE! it was the kind of essay that my teachers would have looked at and handed back without another word. they wouldn't have deigned to grade it. i had to read half of the introduction before finding a complete sentence. *shakes head in disgust* i don't think i'll have any trouble in college at all...

and yeah, i think the good writers have indeed come here. possibly because of the ban on netspeak and general superiority of the site. i'm glad they did, though!

yeah, there are. there's some decent ones on ff.net too, though a huge amount of the stuff on there is pure junk.

yeah... i like to surf through good author's favorite's lists to find good fics. it's a good rule of thumb that if a good author favorites it, it must be good.

Dot to the third!!!! I am an overabuser of Dots too. And i write them out sometimes too (although not in proper writing...) Like when something's very weird, i say or type "Dot dot dot" Hehe.

*SHOCK* Samantha, are you making a stereotype on Aussie grammar?!? Hehe. But yeah ok we don't have the best authors in the world . Except for one. *cough* if you get who i am referring to *cough*

Anne, with that science paper, I do that too. Like everything i read in class i'm like partially and unconsiously analysising for sentence structure errors. I'm obsessed with sentence structure work. Doesn't mean my sentence structures are good or anything, but still. I mean, in things handed out in school, you'd expect them to be correct, yes? And when i'm reading my little brother's writing i'm like biting my lip to stop myself from correcting all his sentence structure work. But if i do he gets all pissy and offended.

Yikes. That is depressing, that a college student could write such bad essays. Yeah, it sort of puts a bit less stress on getting into uni/college. *rolls eyes*. What this world has come to *faints*. .

yup. i think most authors do . and even if the science/history/whatever is perfectly sound, i tend to grade it down if it's badly written. and i'm like that with my brother's things too. *shakes head* it's pretty horrible...

i got it exclamation point it takes a bit of doing comma but after you get the hang of it comma it apostrophe s quite entertaining full stop and i use quotation mark full stop quotation mark as opposed to quotation mark period quotation mark because it increases my word count full stop lol full stop i apostrophe m so pathetic dot to the third
